An interview with Aljazeera TV/English

Rouhi Shafii

Today, I had an interview with the Ajazeera about the creation of a new 'Super Agency' for women within UN, which will focus specifically on women's needs in various parts of the world. The exisitng agencies are under-funded and inadquate to respond to the needs of three billion women. The proposed super agency with an initial budget of one billion dollar a year and thousands of staff in various regions will be able to deal with women's health, especially those with HIV Aids, education, violence and rape, honour killings, empolyment and empowerment.

Of all member states, Iran, Eygpt, Cuba and Sudan have opposed to the idea and asked for the postponment of the proposal!

Cuba, I don't understand the reason, I told them. Sudan & Eygpt I understand. Sudan has recently sentenced a woman to 40 lashes for wearing tousers! And Iran is not a surprise at all. First, Iran is not even a signitory to the UN resolutions on elimination of discrimination against women. Secondly, this Iranian government is not even the legitimate government chosen by the Iranian people to speak and decide on their behalf.
