Amnesty InternationalA Women's Action Network event
The Circle
by Jafar Panahi
When: Wednesday 26 Aug at 6.30 pm Where: Human Rights Action Centre, London
'Restrained yet powerful, devastating in its emotional effects. The Circle is a landmark in Iranian Cinema'. Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.
The Circle begins with a black screen and the cries of a woman giving birth in a maternity ward. The newborn child is a baby girl, the grandmother moans 'the in-laws will be furious. They'll insist on divorce'. From day one, in other words, being female in a patriarchal theocracy like Iran marks you out as an inferior citizen. The director follows with deep empathy and compassion the thwarted efforts of several women to escape from a situation of entrapment within the system.
Winner of the FIPRESCI Award for best feature and the Golden Lion at the 2000 Venice Film Festival.
This screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with invited guests: Ann Harrison, Researcher on Iran at the International SecretariatDiana Nammi, Chair of the Iranian & Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation
Rouhi Shafii, Iranian writer and member of the Women's Action Network Committee
