Since June 2009 presidential elections and the coup that followed and people's constant demonstrations and objections against the 'selected' president Ahmadinejad, thousands of Iranians have been detained either on the streets or at home or workplace and taken to various unknown prisons. The number of people in custody and those murdered under torture or killed on the streets is uknown. The judiciary system which is supposed to protect the rights of people is working hand in hand with the henchmen of the 'selected' president. Therefore, families of the detainees are deprived visitations or even any news of the whereabouts of their loved ones. In some cases, the mutilated body of a son or brother has been given to the families long after he has been dead. Women have been in the forefront of the demonstrations and as a result many have been taken prisoners. We are concerned about these women as they have been denied access to lawyers or visitation.
A group of Iranian women outside the country have established a committee of solidarity with women in the Iranian prisons. The blog hambastegizanan(women solidarity) will update the readers on the names, cases and the situation of women in detention. Iranianwomenuk & focusiran are two sister weblogs which will publish the English version on the Persian solidarity blog. Please check with these blogs which publish information and news in English. http://blogs.amnesty.org.uk/focusiran
